Volunteering at GYI

What does volunteering look like at GYI?

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Gateshead Youth Initiative. By giving their time, skills and energy, our volunteers help create safe, welcoming spaces where young people can learn, have fun and feel supported. Volunteering is a chance to make a real difference in your community while gaining new experiences, building confidence and connecting with others who share a passion for helping young people thrive.

What you’ll be doing

Our volunteers support a wide range of activities depending on their interests and availability. This could include helping to run our Friday Youth Night or Youth Drop-In sessions, supporting our tuck-shop, setting up activities or simply being there to listen and encourage young people.

Behind the scenes, some volunteers assist with event planning, administration, communications or fundraising. There is no one-size-fits-all role, and we will work with you to find something that matches your strengths and what you would like to get out of your experience. Every volunteer, whether on the front line or behind the scenes, plays an important part in helping us deliver safe, engaging and high-quality sessions.

Who Can Volunteer

At present, we welcome volunteers aged 18 and over to join our team. This age requirement is in place to ensure we meet our safeguarding responsibilities and maintain a safe environment for everyone involved in our sessions. No previous experience in youth work is needed, only enthusiasm, reliability and a genuine interest in supporting young people.

We know that many young people are eager to get involved, and we are working on an exciting opportunity that will allow those under 18 to start gaining experience soon. This will give them the chance to develop new skills, take on responsibilities and potentially become youth work volunteers when they turn 18. More information about this will be announced shortly.
